Getting the right door for your situation is key. For ultimate control (of who can stay and who can go), you need a microchip-enabled entry. Here’s the technology I’m waiting for: remote-controlled (or smartphone-controlled) manipulation of when your door is open for business and when not. At a minimum, let’s demand some timers on these things! Other than that, here are my recommendations.
Bi-directional microchip door
by SureFlapThe “DualScan” door by SureFlap means you can program a variety of entry credentials: your confident indoor/outdoor cat can have free reign, but your indoor-only cat can be “keyed” to enter if she ever slips outside. I have had up to four of these at once. Not only do they do the trick for keeping cats in or out as you choose, I’ve used these in separating cats from one room to the next. These are more functionality than you’d need on the “Dining Room” design on Radlilcat. For those, the basic microchip door is all that’s needed.

by SureFlapThe SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap uses your cat’s existing identification microchip as an electronic door “key,” which allows access to one cat and not another. The microchip cat door can be used by both small and medium sized cats and can be installed in doors, windows or walls with the appropriate mounting accessories. It is a great feature to add to my “Dining Room” design and will allow you once and for all to keep your cats from eating the other’s food! For all my outdoor access points, I’ve moved up to the dual-scan.

by Ideal Pet ProductsThis is not a standalone item. This is an add-on for the telescoping frame door, also by Ideal. It is meant for an extra thick wall (picture mine: a combination of sheetrock, wood framing and stucco). This creates a tunnel/corridor that connects the front and back doors (the actual door flap and frames). It allows for a 9 inch tunnel, opposed to the 3 inch tunnel in the standard model.

by Ideal Pet ProductsI was very confused by cat door terminology before diving in, and I couldn’t understand the “telescoping” part. However, it was key to fitting across a very thick wall (stucco outdoor wall). However, what this door requires is the wall kit, in order to actually make use of the telescoping feature. Combined with that, this was an amazing door for my enclosed patio: no microchip scanning needed, just a plastic solid door to put in place when no entry/exit is needed. The flaps themselves are flexible vinyl with a nice seal. May not be ideal in freezing temperatures, but good enough for the San Francisco fog.
