There are books I turn to again and again! I hope you’ll find this list just as useful as it is to me. I’m not selling anything on this site (though if you purchase with a click from my lists I receive a few pennies from the affiliate site), but soon I’ll publish a children’s story that I wrote and illustrated called “Purrball Meets Burrball in Brazil.” It is a very fun story that will help you share your love of cats (and all animals) with your kids. Cat Sense: How the New Feline Science Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Pet
by John BradshawThis book, more than any other I’ve read, sheds light on cat behaviors backed by scientific data. Bradshaw poses many theories and describes, in very simple terms, the experiments he and his research team have conducted. He explains traits and body language and helps cat owners better understand their cat. John Bradshaw is Foundation Director of the Anthrozoology Institute at the University of Bristol and author of the New York Times bestseller Dog Sense (not many cat authors are either that accredited or have an equal interest in canines!). This is an incredibly interesting read to get a much clearer picture on why cats are the way they are (plus so much more on history, genealogy, and beyond…)
Available on AmazonCat Vs. Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat
by Pam Johnson-BennettWorld-renowned behaviorist Pam Johnson-Bennett provides effective ways and techniques on how to efficiently manage multi-cat households, often a challenge with these territory-driven animals. Cat vs. Cat helps owners understand how significant it is for cats to protect their territory and how to deal with them learning to share it. It also educates the owners on how to prevent bad behaviors and helps in maintaining a well-behaved and socialized cat. This book is the perfect read before you introduce a second cat (you can avoid some big mistakes before they happen) and for those who have been already unsuccessfully juggling two personalities already.
Available on AmazonFeline Nutrition: Nutrition for the Optimum Health and Longevity of your Cat
by Lynn CurtisThis is by far my favorite book on cat nutrition. However, my eyes glaze over in sections that are purely technical (Lynn Curtis has a background in biology and chemistry and it shows). Despite skipping over the things that are too advanced for my brain to grasp, the core of this book is invaluable and understandable to boot. It’s a short read of 132 pages with a decent index and I refer back to it frequently.
Available on AmazonFood Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food
by Ann N. MartinAnn Martin’s “Food Pets Die For” is one of the toughest (emotionally) I’ve ever read. She has extensively investigated the pet food industry and uncovered some horrific practices. While some of it is truly shocking, much of it is what I had expected of enterprises out purely for capital gain, not individuals like us who adore pets and who would put only the best ingredients in anything they eat, much like we do the same for ourselves. An important read, even if you sometimes have to turn away and take a deep breath like at a scary movie.
Available on AmazonStarting from Scratch: How to Correct Behavior Problems in Your Adult Cat
by Pam Johnson-BennettA very informative book that can help you correct your cat’s negative behavioral problems (even at an advanced age where you think there’s little hope of changing). It can be incredibly frustrating to experience litter box issues, and even more so if your cat was previously using it successfully. Johnson-Bennett takes you through many factors that can contribute to issues and gives you very easy and practical approaches to solve them.
